Elizabeth Olivia Stewart

ELIZABETH OLIVIA STEWART (fondly known as Sis) was born on January 27, 1927, in Baltimore, Maryland, to the late Joseph (affectionately known as “Papa Joe”) and Sarah Johnson. She departed this life on April 7, 2026, surrounded by her loving family. On September 16, 1949, Elizabeth united in marriage with the late Thomas James Stewart Sr., (fondly known as “T.J.”) Their marriage spanned fifty-nine years and stood as an example of love, commitment, and partnership. Elizabeth attended Baltimore City Public Schools, and she began her professional career with the United States Social Security Administration as a Grade 1 employee. Through dedication, perseverance, and excellence, she earned numerous awards and promotions, ultimately attaining a Grade 10 Management Supervisory position. Finding greater fulfillment in direct service and mentorship, she chose to return to a Grade 9 role, where she proudly served as a Lead Trainer. After more than twenty-five years of faithful service as a dedicated civil servant, Elizabeth retired. Retirement opened the door to adventure for Elizabeth and Thomas, as they embarked on many Caribbean cruises together. It is safe to say they visited nearly every island in both the Western and Eastern Caribbean, enjoying new experiences and creating cherished memories. Elizabeth was an exceptional cook, expressing her love through her meals—especially during the holidays. She made certain that every holiday meal was prepared with care, and her sweet potato pies became legendary within the family. These prized desserts were often eagerly claimed, sometimes even hidden away, to be enjoyed later in private. Family was the foundation of Elizabeth’s life. She placed great importance on creating happy memories for her children, particularly during the holidays, and often spoke fondly of her own childhood experiences. And now, when her children gather at family functions, conversations inevitably turn to the joyful times shared at 304 North Calhoun Street especially during the holiday season. An avid and voracious reader, Elizabeth could easily read two to three books in a single day. When she was not immersed in a book, she found great pleasure in solving crossword puzzles. She leaves to cherish her memory: sister, Marlene Johnson; two daughters, Gloria Anita Wiley and Kathleen Denise Stewart; and two sons, Thomas James Stewart Jr. and Joseph Nathaniel Stewart Sr. She was preceded in death by her beloved daughter, Karen Michelle Matthews. She also leaves nine grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who will forever cherish her legacy.
