Dana Mack Marcus

“She made the world brighter with her presence, and she leaves it richer with her memory” - Author Unknown Almighty God, in his infinite wisdom and love, touched the heart of his beloved daughter Dana Faye Mack-Marcus on August 17, 2025, where at her home she transited into his loving embrace. Dana Faye Mack-Marcus, a devoted wife, affectionate mother, doting aunt, and caring daughter and sister, was born on October 8, 1966, in Baltimore City, Maryland, to the late Francis Elizabeth Jefferson-Mack and Fate Matthew. Dana was educated in Baltimore City’s public schools and was a graduate of Carver Vocational Technical High School, where she studied Cosmetology. Due to her outgoing and social nature, she was in many clubs and activities and made many lifelong friends. In January 1985, by chance, Dana met the man who would become the love of her life — Matthew Marcus, affectionately known to her as Bird, her best friend and Ride or Die. Introduced by their mutual friend, Tina Craig Richardson, the two first formed a strong friendship before beginning to date about a year and a half later. From that point on, their bond was inseparable; you rarely saw one without the other. They shared a love so deep it was evident in the way they laughed together, spoke their own language and cherished their unique sense of humor. In 1995, they were married, and from their union came their greatest blessing —their son, Christopher Matthew Marcus. The joy of motherhood filled Dana’s heart, and she devoted herself wholeheartedly to loving and supporting her family. The Hard Worker: Dana was a true go-getter. From her high school years onward, she pursued her passion for hairstyling, working both from home and in a variety of salons. Alongside her craft, she built a remarkable career with the State of Maryland, dedicating 27 years to the Maryland Department of Health. At the same time, she stood firmly beside her husband, managing billing and scheduling for his business with care and commitment. In 2023, Dana began a new chapter, bringing her talents to the Maryland State Police Forensic Science Division. The Philanthropist: Dana was a natural caretaker at heart. Whether preparing hot meals for her nieces and nephews or organizing gatherings for friends, her generosity and love for others always shone through. That devotion became especially evident in 2015 when her husband was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. Dana tirelessly researched treatments, created dietary plans, scheduled medical appointments, and managed it all while continuing to work. Although her husband’s passing was a heartbreaking loss, it gave Dana a renewed sense of purpose. She became a supporter of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, fundraised through the UMMSMaryland Half Marathon & 5K, and later founded her own nonprofit, Karetakers of Kolor, as a way to extend her compassion to the wider community. Beyond her service to others, Dana cherished life’s simple joys. She loved reading, writing poetry, going for walks, and spending time with her family and friends — moments that reflected her warmth and spirit. Throughout her life, Dana wore many cherished titles: daughter, sister, niece, devoted wife, loving mother, trusted friend, and confidante. Among her most beloved nicknames was “Hotts,” affectionately given by a neighborhood friend. She also took great pride in being called “Aunt Dana,” a name that always brought a smile to her face. She found joy in watching the children she once cradled grow into accomplished adults. What people loved most about Dana was her radiant spirit — her bright, welcoming demeanor paired with a bold, unforgettable presence. She was truly one of a kind, and her light will continue to shine in the hearts of all who knew her. Dana leaves to celebrate her life and memory: her son, Christopher Matthew Marcus; three sisters, Margaret Owens, Gerleane Robinson and Veronica Barnwell-Lemon; sister-in-law, Dr. Florence Marcus; three brothers, Richard Mack, Wendell Lee and Kim Mack; aunt, Lillian Figgs; a host of cousins, nieces and nephews; three bonus sisters, Mrs. Tina Richardson, Mrs. Zina Carryall and Mrs. Denene White; and dearly cherished childhood, work and neighbor friends.
