Carmelita Hackett

CARMELITA BERNADETTE HACKETT was born on September 5, 1943 in Baltimore, Maryland; the tenth of sixteen children born to the late Weems and Marie Blair Hackett. She passed from this life on January 14, 2026, after a long illness. Following the death of both her parents within six months of each other, she lived with her grandmother; Ida Matilda Wims, until she passed away. Carmelita then spent much of her formative years at Saint Elizabeth’s Orphanage as well as many of her siblings. When she was eleven years old, she began staying with her older sister Anita Sterrette and her husband. Carmelita was instrumental in the upbringing of their children, Devereaux and Dorian Sterrette. Carmelita attended Saint Pius Elementary School and graduated from Forest Park High School. She received a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Maryland, College Park in 1978 as well as a Bachelor of Science degree from the same institution in 1981. Carmelita began her career at the Social Security Administration (SSA) in 1962 and quickly rose through the ranks because of her impeccable work ethics and dedication to her employees. She retired after thirty-eight years of exemplary service during which she received numerous achievement awards. She retired as Manager of the Security and Integrity staff. During her employment at SSA, she was a member of Blacks in Government. In addition, she was an active volunteer with the American Red Cross which she continued until illness prevented her from participating. She was also a regular blood and blood platelets donor. Carmelita was a lifetime member of Saint Cecilia’s Roman Catholic Church/New All Saints Church which she continued to support financially until five months prior to her passing. In addition to both her parents, Carmelita was preceded in death by her sisters, Anita Sterrette, Gloria Jackson, Teresa Jordon, Dolores Bowles, Laverna Carroll and June Richey; her brothers, William, Emanuel, Alfred, Adrian, Donald and Michael Anthony Hackett. Two other siblings passed at childbirth or shortly thereafter. Carmelita leaves to mourn her loving sister, Imelda Hackett-Felton, and devoted niece and nephew, Maria James and Devereaux Sterrette; also numerous other nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, great-great nieces and nephews, and great-great-great nieces and nephews, cousins and numerous other relatives including two sister-in-laws, Toni Hackett and Cato Hackett-Zegel. Carmelita also leaves to mourn best friend Bobbie Swann and devoted friends Miriam Burroughs and Wilda Holt. Carmelita was a kind, generous, beautiful person with a giving spirit. Her demeanor was one of calm and peace. She was blessed with a deep love for family and friends, She cared tremendously for the well-being of all that she encountered throughout her life. She was active in making sure her siblings were cared for and performed tasks such as transporting them to medical appointments, assisting whenever and wherever she was needed in their daily lives
