Alice Virginia Harvey

ALICE VIRGINIA HARVEY was born on November 20, 1941, in Baltimore, Maryland, to the late Herbert D. Shields and Alice Lokeman-Shields. Affectionately known as “Puddin” by family and friends, Alice was the eldest of seven siblings and a loving matriarch whose life reflected faith, perseverance, and devotion to family. At an early age, Alice received her religious foundation at Allen A.M.E. Church, the Lokeman family church. In later years, she continued her faith journey as a devoted member of St. James A.M.E. Church. She received her formal education through the Baltimore City Public School System and graduated from Frederick Douglass High School. Following high school, Alice worked diligently as a cosmetologist and later at Benkert’s Restaurant. Through hard work and discipline, she saved to purchase her first car, the first automobile owned in her immediate family. She often fondly recalled her mother’s words when she dreamed of owning a convertible: “Work hard, save your money, and you can buy anything you want.” This wisdom became a guiding principle throughout her life; one she frequently shared with others while emphasizing financial responsibility and the importance of what truly matters most. Alice was united in holy matrimony with Andrew Dewitt Harvey on November 12, 1966, at Mt. Pisgah C.M.E. Church. Their loving union endured until Andrew’s passing in 2017. From this marriage, two sons were born: Michael Harvey Sr. and Benjamin Scott Harvey Sr. Alice devoted 27 years of service to the food service industry before retiring. After retirement, she and her husband enjoyed traveling and spending time together. Alice had a deep love for cooking and continued preparing meals for family and friends long after leaving the industry. She was especially known for cooking lunch or dinner whenever company visited, a tradition she lovingly maintained until the last days of her life. After a valiant battle with heart complications, Alice peacefully transitioned to her heavenly home on January 5, 2026. Throughout her illness, she remained steadfast in faith and spirit, never complaining and never giving up, all while maintaining a brave heart, a cheerful outlook, and hope for brighter days and improved health. Alice Virginia Harvey was preceded in death by her parents, Herbert D. Shields and Alice Lokeman-Shields; her husband, Andrew Dewitt Harvey; her brothers, Walter (Butch) Shields, Carl Shields, and Victor Shields; her son, Michael Harvey Sr.; and her grandson, Michael Harvey Jr. She is survived by her loving son, Benjamin S. Harvey Sr.; two stepchildren, Andrew D. Harvey Jr. (Zakia Harvey) and Cheryl D. Harvey; three siblings, Nellie Maskal (the late Ambesso Maskal), Jeanette Burke, and Brian Shields (Sandy Shields); three grandchildren, Bria Harvey, Benjamin S. Harvey Jr. (Janee Harvey), and Arielle Borisade (Yemi Borisade); nine great-grandchildren; her aunt, Doris Randolph; and her cherished nieces and nephews, Craig Shields, Dana Shields (Clara Jenkins), Dean Farrar, Miniya Maskal, Omar Burke, Rashidatu Burke, and Isaiah Shields. She also leaves a host of other relatives and dear friends who will forever cherish her memory.
