Paula Ann Green

On January 27, 1935, Paula Ann Green was born in Baltimore, MD to the union of the late Lucille and Thomas E. Matthews. Raised in Cherry Hill, she was the oldest girl among five siblings: Carlton “Yummy” Dotson, Thomas Matthews, Jr., Margaret Henry, affectionately known as “Peggy”, and Patricia Henry, affectionately known as “Pat”. Paula graduated from Douglas High School in 1954, in Baltimore, MD and attended Towson State University, majoring in Early Childhood Education. Paula was a woman of great character, wore many hats as she ministered to all around her, and had a variety of loving nicknames. Among them were “Paula”, “PG”, or to many, simply “Mom”. She was raised in the Catholic Church; however, on Good Friday of 2013, she gave her life to Christ and became a member of the New Psalmist Baptist Church in Baltimore, MD. On March 19, 1954 she married the love of her life, Daniel Rosell Green. From this union six children were born: Paula M. Green-Holt affectionately known as “Shelly”, the late Daniel R. Green, Jr., Carl C. Green, the late Blaine T. Green, Donna M. Green-Jones, and Gretchen T. Green-Anderson. One grandson, the late Daniel Rodney Green whom she raised as her son. Paula was the matriarch of her family, reaching far and wide to include many outside of her biological family. She was an Angel who answered whenever called and never complained. She opened her heart and her home to family and friends in need, and loved and cared for them as she cared for her own children, without any expectations in return. Her home was the gathering place for the family. Whether it was a holiday, someone’s birthday, or a typical Monday morning when Paula and her very close sister Peggy, were getting the kids ready for school, home was always filled with the sounds of laughter and tremendous amounts of love. The two of them spent countless hours baking home-made cakes and pies while the kids were at school; peach cobbler... apple pies... gingerbread, and more! Those recipes are still in the family today. Four generations were raised and loved in 2509, creating family traditions that have lasted to this very day. Love, family, education, and faith – that was Paula Green, and that is the legacy she’s left us with. Whenever Paula’s name was mentioned, Rosell’s wasn’t far behind, perhaps being mentioned in the same sentence. They shared an undeniable bond, defining what it meant to be a team. In reality, they were more than a team, they were soulmates. They were attentive to one another and looked out for each other – they were exemplary parents. His passing on her birthday was his last gift to her, making that occasion even more special – the day he finally received peace from his long-standing suffering, and went home to be with the Lord. Together, they were constantly setting examples for those who were watching. Paula was an outstanding mother and the glue that held our family together. She taught her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews many lessons and educated them about everything from cleanliness, to having strong morals and values – most importantly, the value of family. She was selfless, always there for everyone and dependable beyond measure, no matter the circumstances. After a nine-year battle with Dementia, Paula peacefully transitioned into an eternal rest, in her home and surrounded by family and loved ones, under Gilcrest Home Hospice Care. She is now reunited with her loved ones, and we will miss her sorely. Paula is survived by four biological children: Paula M. Green-Holt, Carl C. Green, Donna M. Green-Jones, Gretchen T. Green-Anderson; one adopted daughter, Taffy Dobbins; one adopted son, Belton Robertson; three grandsons: Daniel Redmond, Devin Dawson, Forrest Jones; two granddaughters: Jewel A. Green, Meagan R. Dawson; one great-granddaughter, Danira Green; one great-grandson, Ryan Willis; one sister, Patricia Henry; two sisters-in-law: Beta Dotson, Karen Matthews; one son-in-law, James Holt; five cousins: Hazel Ross, Anita Burton, Venita Jackson, Beverly Ellis-Nowell, Sonya Ross; a fond son, Earl Bell, and a host of nieces and nephews.
