Johnny Lee Young

On Thursday, January 11th, 2024, God peacefully called JOHNNY LEE YOUNG home while he was in the loving presence of his son, Brian Young, and his godson, Walter Stokes III. Johnny was born on January 23rd, 1936, in Edgemere, Baltimore County, Md, to Robert Alston and Sylvester Rachel Young. He was the younger brother of Helen Ruthie Mae. Johnny was baptized at an early age and was a long time, active member of the Saint Mathews Methodist Church in Turner Station, Md. Johnny later joined the Ray of Hope Baptist Church and served faithfully as a member of the Trustee Board, the Beatrice Moseley Usher Board, and the Culinary Committee. In 1954, he graduated from Sollers Point High School in Turner Station. Johnny soon started his career at Bethlehem Steel Corporation. In September, 1958, he was drafted into the United States Army, stationed at Fort Sill in Lawton, Ok, where he served in the Missile Battalion 84th Artillery, until he was honorably discharged in September, 1960. He then resumed his career at Bethlehem Steel where he worked as a steelworker, and eventually a foreman until his retirement in 1996. On December 7, 1957, Johnny married Bettye L. Flood and from this union one son, Brian was born. These two were the joy and love of his life. Johnny and Bettye shared 44 years of marriage. After Bettye’s passing, Johnny shared a special relationship with Lenora Warren to the end. He also had a daughter, Loretta Jean Young, and a son, John McRae, prior to his marriage with Bettye. Always known for his wonderful smile, his largest smiles came later in life from his grandchildren, Donovan and Jocelyn. A very proud grandfather, he was known to often share their pictures with complete strangers. He is survived by: his son, Brian; daughter-in-law, Eleanne; grandchildren, Donovan and Jocelyn; son, John; daughter-in-law, Emma; granddaughters, Amendrius and Amanda; great-grandson, Octavius; sister-in-law, Gloria Flood, nieces and nephews Risa Robinson, Wendell Robinson, Bonita (Darrell) McQuay, Ray Robinson, Landis (Sharon) Robinson, Sybil Cooke, Stephanie Flood, Janice (Darryl) Echols, Zelda Davis, Kim (Rick) Funches and Bronte (Bill) Montgomery; and a host of great-nieces and -nephews, cousins, and friends.
