Smith Johnson and the late William H. Johnson, Sr. in Cockeysville, Maryland. He departed this life after a brief illness on Friday, April 14, 2023. William (also affectionately known as Jr., Bill, Will, or Uncle Bo) was educated in the Baltimore County School System attending schools in Lutherville and Towson, Maryland. Always a hard worker, he began his career in construction with Harry T. Campbell Company in 1948. William was drafted and served in the U.S. Army from 1953-1955. Upon his return from Germany, he worked for the Gillett family in Worthington, Maryland before returning to Harry T. Campbell Company. Over the years, he worked his way to foreman and was an expert in heavy equipment, concrete, and blacktopping. For many years, he had his own side-business providing concrete and blacktopping services throughout the region. William retired from the construction business in 1995 and was devoted to his family, church, and community. There was nothing too big or too small for William. He always shared what he had and would give the shirt off his back if someone was in need. For many years, he would help families in their time of grief by opening graves in local cemeteries. If he could not use his backhoe, William would dig the grave by hand. He was truly a blessing to many and will be missed. Anyone that knew William knew that he loved James Brown and the roar of a motorcycle! He was a proud owner of a 1956 Harley and an original member of The Flying Eagles where he remained an honorary member. William and Rosita traveled the U.S. with the “Road Hogs” for many years. In the past ten years, he and his son Gregory would ride three-wheelers. Cycling was in his blood! William loved the Lord, and his faith sustained him. He joined Piney Grove United Methodist Church in 1967 where he was a devoted member and faithful trustee. Until his failing health, he even maintained the grounds. William leaves to mourn: Rosita, his devoted wife of 59 years; one son, Donald “Greg” (Sandy); two daughters, Tanya Johnson and Monique Johnson; grandchildren, Felicia Johnson, Ryan Irwin, Elizabeth Johnson, Sean Johnson, Staci Foster, Dorien Lewis, Karrissa Johnson, and Muriel Whye; two sisters-in-law, Sandra LeVere and Elizabeth Johnson; brother-in-law, Gino Travis; nephew, Gary Clark (Lori); and eight great-grandchildren. He is also survived by a host of loving relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by sons Michael Johnson and Garrett Johnson, daughters Ellen Johnson and Inez Whye and siblings Hilda Tucker, Nellie Hill, Eugene Smith, James “Kenny” Johnson, John “Buddy” Johnson and Margaret Jane Ross.
