Rev. Dr. Alex Young

REV. DR. ALEX YOUNG, son of the late Alex and Laura Young, was born in Brooks County Quitman-Georgia, on December 1, 1937. He departed this life Wednesday, April 19, 2023, at 4:42 a.m. at Union Memorial Hospital. He received his early education in Brooks County, Georgia and graduated in 1957. After graduation, Dr. Young traveled to Baltimore, Maryland, where he attended Morgan State College. Extending his education, Dr. Young, attended Retz Electronic School where he received a degree in engineering; he also attended the Baltimore School of the Bible and graduated with honors. Additionally, endowed with the zeal to further his studies, Dr. Young continued his studies at the Maryland Baptist School of Religion, Virginia Seminary Extension; whereupon he received his B.A. in Theology. Also, Dr. Young earned his M.A. Degree from the aforementioned school under the tutelage of Dr. Eddie R. Wilson. In May of 1986, Dr. Young received the Doctor of Divinity degree, conferred on him by Dr. Eddie R. Wilson thereby achieving his educational goals. Dr. Young married the late Estella Evans and is the father of five children, three daughters and two sons: Charles, Debra, Janice, Stephannie, and Alex Junior. He has eleven grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. After Estella’s passing, Dr. Young married Juanita Maultsby. The family also, now includes two additional children, they are Sheryl and Wilfred, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. After returning from Armed Services, Dr. Young joined Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church under the pastoralship of the late Rev. Williams. Dr. Young joined the Mount Calvary Star Baptist Church in May of 1965 under the leadership of the Rev. N.H. Toyer, where he gained spiritual knowledge. During this period, Dr. Young dedicated himself to the service of God. He worked whole heartedly on the Senior Usher Board, the Gospel Chorus, and the Sunday School. Recognizing his faithfulness to his church and God’s work, Dr. Young was ordained a deacon and served as secretary of the deacon board. Rising to even higher heights in Kingdom building, Dr. Young was voted in as Pastor by an overwhelming vote of the Mt. Calvary Star Baptist Church in October 1977 and was ordained in November 1977. God has blessed Dr. Young under his leadership to ordain seven and send out five preachers as pastors and assistant pastors for the Gospel Ministry. Not only has he served as an excellent leader in his church but also served the community by participating in many organizations: • Scout Leader of the Boy Scouts • Past Worshipful Master of the F&AYR Masons • Member of the NAACP • Member of the CUE’s Organization • Moderator of the Mt. Bethel Association (2003-2007) • Served as the First Vice-President of the Baptist Pastors’ Conference of Baltimore and Vicinity During the 45 years that Dr. Young has served as Pastor of Mt. Calvary Star Baptist Church, tremendous strides and achievements have occurred. Foremost, many souls have been added to God’s house. Various programs have also been innovative in the community and a blessing to individuals in the community. Dr. Young is a strong man sent by God to Mt. Calvary Star Baptist Church, filled with the Holy Spirit, and a concern for humanity. His dedication and unlimited service to God, his Church and his community truly distinguish him as a good shepherd about a good work. He not only preached the word, but he lived it. One of Pastor Young’s favorite quotes is, “If I can help somebody as I pass along; then my living will not be in vain.” Rev. Dr. Alex Young leaves to mourn his departure: loving wife, Juanita Young (Estella Young preceded him in death); five children, Charles Young (Jenette), Debra Boykins, Rev. Janice Burrell, Minister Stephannie Faison (Reggie), Rev. Alex Young Jr. (Belinda); eleven grandchildren, Chanelle McRae, Janella McRae, Reginald Faison, Patrice Faison, Everett White, Bernadette Barnes, Tunisia Pearson, Claudia Hayes, Chloe Rainey, Charles E. Young II, Alex Isaiah Young; ten great-grandchildren; four sisters and brothers, Pauline English (deceased), Earline Sheppard (deceased), Ernest Carnegie (deceased) and Bobby Young; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
