Charles Henry Dowdy

Charles Henry Dowdy was born in Baltimore, MD on March 23, 1936 to the late Henry and Virginia Dowdy of Meherrin, VA. He was the oldest son of six children. Charles passed away peacefully in his home surrounded by his family on Friday, April 17, 2020. He was a member of Our Saviour Lutheran Church on The Alameda in Baltimore. Later in his life, Charlie came to truly understand what it meant to have a trusting relationship in the Lord Jesus Christ. Charles received his primary and secondary education from the Baltimore County Public School System in Sparrows Point, MD. Throughout his adolescent years, he worked his way up the ranks of the Boy Scouts of America to achieve the Eagle Scout recognition. Charles also attended Morgan State College and graduated from R.E.T.S. Electronic School. After graduation, he was hired by Western Electric as a machine operator in 1958. Always having been a hard worker, Charles received various promotions throughout his 30-year career. In 1959, he married Isabel “Izzy” Dodson and out of this union came one daughter, Monica Rene’. They were both the love of his life, as were his grandchildren with whom he spent much of his time. In 1985, Charles retired from Western Electric. His free time gave him the opportunity to spend more time with his family, pursue traveling and his personal interests and hobbies. He and Isabel loved to travel domestically and internationally with Monica in tow. Hong Kong and Brazil were two of Charlie and Izzy’s most memorable trips. He also loved teaching Monica the skills of his trade. As the family man and excellent provider that he was, he was also generous to many others. Charles was someone you could always depend on. He loved to stay in touch with his family and friends by visiting them all over the country. Charlie was a jack of all trades. From jazzy caps to Indian head nickels, he always had a corner full of one-of-a-kind pieces. As a jazz lover, he had a broad collection of albums, tapes, and CDs that brought him much joy. Managing real estate was another passion of his; owning several rental homes throughout Baltimore City that he maintained with his own skills and abilities. He loved to work with his hands, having designed and built several pieces of unique furniture such as Monica’s nursery set. He won multiple local awards for his creativity and design of cedar chests, dressers, shelves, and more. Everyone knew that they could always come to him to perform quality electrical, plumbing, and HVAC household repairs. His craftsmanship was often on display in his home, including his personal office. His fondness for cars and boats were evident by his personal collection of a 67’ Mustang, 2002 Corvette Stingray, and Scout boat. He would often be found fixing up his own cars, with Monica to help, and boating the waters of the Patapsco River. In December 2019, Isabel and Charles celebrated 60 years of a loving and faithful marriage. Charles is preceded in death by his siblings: Delores, Samuel, and Marion. He leaves to cherish his life: wife, Isabel; daughter, Monica; son-in-law, Kevin; granddaughter, Kyle; grandson, Christopher; two brothers, David (Dot); Ronald (Nancy); one brother-in-law, Phillip; nieces, nephews, cousins, other family and friends.
