Aaron Plymouth

AARON PLYMOUTH, also known as “Sam” to his maternal relatives, was born on September 7, 1940, in Grifton, North Carolina. He received Christ and at the age of 21 was baptized at White Rock United Presbyterian Church in Kinston, NC. Aaron transitioned to his heavenly home on May 27, 2023. Aaron was preceded in death by his parents, Meldred Leroy and Leona Specks-Plymouth, and his older brother, Wilbert Mack Plymouth. Aaron attended public schools in North Carolina. He graduated from Adkin High School, the only High School for Blacks in Kinston, NC. Next, Aaron attended Fayetteville State University in Fayetteville, NC, from which he graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Education. He also attended the University of Pittsburgh in Pittsburgh, PA, where he graduated with a Master’s degree in Education, and Loyola University in Baltimore, MD, where he earned a Certificate of Advanced Studies in Education. Aaron’s life was dedicated to teaching and making a difference. He believed “knowledge gives you power, but good character will give you respect”. Aaron started his career as a teacher in Craven County, NC and then in Pittsburgh, PA for a combined four years. Aaron’s life was dedicated to teaching and making a difference. Aaron started his career as a teacher in Fayetteville, North Carolina and Pittsburgh, PA for a combined four years. In 1974, Aaron moved to Baltimore County, MD and started teaching at Stemmers Run Junior High School. In his 36-year tenure with Baltimore County Public Schools, Aaron was certified as a K-12 Reading Specialist, Elementary School subjects, Middle School Language Arts & Social Studies, Elementary and Secondary School Supervision, and Elementary and Secondary School Administration. After an additional year teaching in Howard County Public Schools, he finally retired to enjoy fun and travel, all while his desire for serving the public continued to grow. Aaron had a strong passion for serving the community. He was involved in, but certainly not limited to, the North Carolina Association of Educators, the Chair of the Combined Communities Advocacy Council of Greater Randallstown, former Vice President, President, and President Emeritus of the Stevenswood Improvement Association, Liberty Road Business Association, Teachers Association of Baltimore County, Treasurer of the 10th Legislative District Democratic Club, ordained Deacon and elected member of the Envision Board at Catonsville Presbyterian Church, Vice President of the Baltimore County Obituary Board of Elections Supervisors, Chair of the Baltimore County School Board Nominating Commission, an Assistant Scout Master with the Boy Scouts of America, Troop 846, Baltimore County Redistricting Commission, Baltimore County VOTE4MORE!, and Northwest Area Education Advisory Council. Additionally, he served as a mentor to many, never allowing age to be a barrier to developing relationships and growth. Aaron’s hobbies included gardening, traveling (during which he met his wife of 42 years), cruising, cooking, and spending time with family. His interest in wine was very strong, becoming a self-taught wine sommelier. He enjoyed pairing wines with food and hosting wine tastings. Dare not ask Aaron to serve you some wine with the wrong stemware! At any given point in time, Aaron had over 200 bottles in his home wine cellar. Whether it was fine wine, well-placed words, fighting for right, being a good friend, traveling, or embracing life, Aaron did it with aplomb! Aaron is survived by: his wife, Bernice Brooks Plymouth; sons, Phillip Plymouth and Paul Plymouth of Baltimore, MD; grandsons, Chandler Plymouth and Landon Plymouth of Baltimore, MD; brother, Floyd Junior Plymouth (Carrie) of Kernersville, North Carolina, and sister-in-law, Ester Rose Brooks-Danner of Hanover, MD. Aaron is also survived by his great-aunt and matriarch of the family, Nettie Plymouth Hines of Goldsboro, NC; as well as a host of nephews, nieces, cousins, students, mentees, and friends.
